Instructions What's Required:
1 PDF file (that includes from 2 to 100 or more pages) is
required by us for processing. This is not the same file that
would be used for print publishing because print publishing
requires much higher resolution, much bigger files. You have two options: 1) take the print PDF file and
reprint using Acrobat 9 to the specs below or 2) output the file
directly from Quark/InDesign to the specs below.
PDF Specs:
- Colors in the PDF must be RGB
- PDF for e-edition must be 150 DPI
- Embed all fonts and images
- Save for Acrobat 4 compatability
- Convert gradients or drawing nodes to "simple or smooth"
- Optimize and flatten layers (transparencies)
- Each page of the PDF should be 1Mb or less (eg 40pg PDF=40mb)
Set
Links
Setting links in Acrobat prior to uploading your file is
important because
this way your links will be "live" in the e-edition. Some links
in the PDF
will be actual live text, some will be embedded in graphics.
Acrobat can
automatically make live text links live in seconds. Links that
are embedded in graphics will have to be done manually. Setting
both are done using Acrobat
Performing automatic links in Acrobat 9:
Open PDF, go to Advanced, then Document Processing, then click
Create Links from URL's and then save.
Performing manual links in Acrobat 9:
Open PDF, go to Tools, Advanced Editing, Link Tools and then
highlite the area in the PDF page that you want to link to a web
site or email address.
Getting your PDF to us:
On the SmartReader, FlipBook or NewsReader pages the form on the
page has an "Upload Button" where you can locate the PDF on your
computer and upload the PDF to us with other information that we
need like your company name, contact info and other relative
information.
Potential Problems:
Sometimes when ads come in from outside sources and are placed
in your
production makeup, the incoming file might have corrupt fonts or
unconventional artwork. If you notice when outputting a file
that it hangs at
a certain page indicates problems at a certain page, this should
be corrected at once. Remember, your final file must be optimum
to work efficiently online.
To fix this problem you can either route out the problem on the
page or as a
last resort take a screen capture of the troubled page and
replace it in the
workflow, then output again.
The most common problems in a PDF regarding optimization are:
A) Corrupt fonts
B) Digital drawing with far to many nodes
C) Gradient fills used too much in one drawing
D) Layering and use of non RGB colors
E) Locked PDF's can not be converted
Note: Additional fees apply when files are not prepped
properly or pages have corrupt components that do no process.
Therefore, please check your files closely before sending. If a
page is suspect, either source the problem, or replace the page
in the PDF with a Jpeg of the page, to save additional expenses.
That's it!
Addendum: While we suggest Acrobat 9, any version of Acrobat
will perform a
similar result. Also, if you don't have Acrobat 9 or don't feel
comfortable
setting to the above specs, we can do this for you at a small
additional
charge. However, if this is the case we suggest that you at
least downsize the PDF size and the graphic files to 150 dpi,
otherwise if you try to upload a
PDF "print quality" file, the huge size will take a very long
time to upload.
Also very large files can not be uploaded using our "Upload
Form". Files
larger than 50mb will have to be uploaded using FTP software.
Free FTP sofware is available...we suggest Mozilla FireFox's "FireFTP.
Naturally our "Upload form" lets us know immediately when a file
is sent. If you are sending your file by FTP, send an email
confirmation.

WILL CONFIGURE.
